Installing Vidalia on Windows
Windows users have the option of installing Vidalia by itself, or as part of a bundle that includes the latest version of Tor and Privoxy pre-configured to work together. If you have never installed Tor before, the easiest option is for you to grab the bundle from our download page.
Installing the Bundle
- Grab the latest bundle from our download page.
- Run the installer. You will be prompted for a location into which Vidalia, Tor, and Privoxy will be installed.
- If you've already installed either Vidalia, Tor, or Privoxy you can choose not to install any of the components with the bundle.
- When the installer is complete Vidalia, Tor, and Privoxy will be started for you.
At this point, you can configure your browser or any other SOCKS-capable applications to go through Tor. See Step 2 on this page for more information on configuring your browser. See this page for information on configuring several other applications to use Tor.
Installing Vidalia by Itself
- Make sure you have Tor 0.1.2.x or later installed.
- Grab the latest Vidalia-only installer from our download page.
- Run the installer. You will be prompted for a location into which Vidalia will be installed.
- When the installer is complete, you're ready to run Vidalia!
Note that if you had previously installed Tor into a location other than the default selected by Tor's installer (usually C:\Program Files\Tor), you will need to tell Vidalia where Tor is. Follow these steps to configure the location in which Vidalia looks for Tor:
- Right-click on Vidalia's icon in the system tray and select Configure
- In the group labeled Tor Directory enter the path to your Tor installation or click the Browse button to navigate to it yourself.
- Click Save Settings
Building the Bundle from Source
We have packaged Windows bundles available on our download page, or you can build a bundle yourself. The NSIS script is also available in our repository.
