Description

Hello all, I've discovered this program, and it looks great, so I installed it. I've configured my proxy to localhost, but I've always got an error page from privoxy like that: This is Privoxy 3.0.3 on localhost (127.0.0.1), port 8118, enabled No such domain Your request for http://www.google.com/ could not be fulfilled, because the domain name www.google.com could not be resolved. tor status is "running" I'm on windows xp pro behind a Router (no DHCP) could someone helps me ? Thanks

You might try waiting and refreshing a couple times. If that doesn't help, you could try stopping and restarting Tor so you get new circuits. If it still doesn't work, do you have any sort of firewall software installed that may be misconfigured?

Did the above information help you any?

I've rebooted my computer, but it isn't work anymore, I have no firewall, and I've disabled XP Security center. I'm just behind a router. May be I have to forward portst?

Changed 3 years ago by edmanm

I've rebooted my computer, but it isn't work anymore,

Please be more specific. What is "it"? If "it" doesn't work anymore, does that mean "it" did at one point? Also, do you see any messages in your messsage log while trying to connect to whatever sites you're trying to go to?

No, you don't have to forward any ports if you're only trying to run a Tor client. You probably don't want to disable your XP security center either.

Sorry, I wanted to say that it does not work more: It has never worked. I've nothing in privoxy window exept "May 25 09:44:26 Privoxy(03412) Info: loading configuration file 'config.txt':". And I could not be more specific about "it" because I don't know what is not working. If it can help, my bandwith graph on tor is not a line, I've got some "picks" of incomming connection.

Changed 3 years ago by edmanm

I meant, "do you see any messages in Vidalia's message log while trying to connect to whatever sites you're trying to go to?" The config file we bundle with Privoxy intentionally disables output in the Privoxy window and to disk, since you probably don't want your browsing history to be unnecessarily logged.

Please start Tor, try to connect to, say, google.com, or some other site that you know is reachable and then paste your Vidalia message log content. If you paste your log messages in this ticket, you might want to see this page to learn how to format the text as "preformatted text" so it's readable.

Ok, thanks. That log information would've been helpful to include with your initial report.

We'll need to figure out what really is behind the [scrubbed] text in those messages. To do so, we need to disable a feature in Tor called "SafeLogging?".

  1. Click on Start -> Run -> Type %appdata% and hit OK.
  2. Open the tor folder.
  3. Open the file called torrc in Notepad or Wordpad or whatever your favorite text editor is.
  4. Add this line exactly: SafeLogging 0
  5. Stop and restart Tor using Vidalia.

Then, after Tor is running again (green onion icon in your tray), try to go to google.com again and paste your log output here. It should no longer have [scrubbed] in it.

For more information on your torrc, see this FAQ entry. For more information on SafeLogging and other options, see the Tor manual.

Now that the Vidalia project site is back up, did the message log tell you anything helpful after following the instructions in the last entry? Can you paste the relevant log messages now that the '[scrubbed]' text should be gone? That is, when you try to go to www.google.com in your browser, the log messages similar to those you pasted before should now say 'www.google.com' instead of '[scrubbed]'.

Did you figure out what the problem was? If yes, can you post the solution so we can either document it better or fix our software? If no, can you help us track this down by answering the questions in the previous two posts?

Changed 3 years ago by mandatoryhomicide@…

Sorry if I have not answered, but I couldn't do it earlier. So vidalia doesn't work anymore, and i've desinstalled it. I'll reinstall it and post new log here in a few minutes...

Changed 3 years ago by mandatoryhomicide@…

I reinstalled it, and it seems to be working now. It's a bit slowy, but at least it work ! I've changed nothing... Just reinstall it.

Thanks for all support !

these are the logs after enabling safelogging

You probably haven't gotten enough directory information to be able to build a useful circuit, since there are many Tor servers that allow exit to gmail.com:80. This is not Vidalia's fault.

Let your Tor run for awhile and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't, then perhaps you have or are behind some funky firewall that is preventing Tor from getting directory information.
