Hm? Unless I'm missing something, you aren't necessarily required to specify both (as far as Tor is concerned), so why should Vidalia enforce such a rule?

yes, because if I fill the uid and not the gid textbox at next vidalia restart i get:

May 04 18:01:54:153 [Warning] switch_id(): Error setting GID: Operation not permitted May 04 18:01:54:153 [Warning] Failed to parse/validate config: Problem with User or Group value. See logs for details.

What version of Tor are you running? Also, can you attach your ~/.vidalia/vidalia.conf to this ticket?

I tried to set just the 'Run As User' or just the 'Run As Group' to a user or group, respectively, for which I had the appropriate privileges and it worked fine when I fill in just one but not the other. The error messages above suggest you are trying to run Tor as a user or group for which you do not have sufficient privileges.

Tor version is 0.1.1.26

vidalia.conf is:

Ah. You are trying to run Vidalia with the default Tor in Debian. Ticket #239 has more details on this.

(The other one has more discussion so we'll close this ticket as the duplicate.)

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
