send receive bargraph on systray icon

Reported by: anonymous Owned by: developer
Priority: minor Milestone:
Component: Vidalia Version:

Description

Put a send receive bargraph on systray icon like kerio personal firewall does. That way we do not nee to open the bandwidth graph and so take up desktop space to see if tor is running and routing data.

If this is implemented, I'd like to see this as an option, and not require the user to see a bandwidth bar on their tray.

  • priority changed from major to minor

This option being implemented is dependent on someone giving us a set of icons that can express bandwidth usage. We lack the time or the talent to create them ourselves, but if someone wants to contribute a set of such icons, then we'll consider it further.

Accidently posted this on the wrong ticket (#7), so I'll post it on here.

Do something like the attached picture, (which uses the icons for indicating node responsiveness or bandwidth). It is for when you move your mouse over the systray icon.

I like Will's idea. The Tor Network Status page uses these icons to represent bandwidth.

Are you saying you\'re lacking the talent to create user interface icons and *you\'re* the ones making a \"GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE\" ??? That\'s what GUI stands for you know. c\'mon.

You created that ugly fish/onion lookin vidalia thing, and that giant Macintosh icon. But yeah many agree that it\'s worse than the previous Torcp one.

Anyway if you could *at least* just put some kind of indicator on there (without having to hover the mouse on top of anything.) You know, even a dumb animated little GREEN block on there going ON & OFF to indicate activity (as an option) that would be better than it is now. [and don\'t forget that [x] if tor is off and checkmark [v] if tor is connected] + a little green block during xmit activity. It\'s not something that requires Michelangelo to put a x and a green block on there.

Anyway This Vidalia thing is a GUI. The whole point of it is to provide a USER interface, so you shouldnt be always setting that guy\'s posts to lowest or like \'trivial\' and things like that.

We did not create the current set of icons you call a fish. Please see Corinna Habets's phase one entry to the Tor GUI competition. They were subsequently modifed and improved by helpful Vidalia contributors.

This ticket's priority was set to minor, not trivial, so I'm not sure what your point is. I agree that this would be neat, but we have some neat things coming up in Vidalia in the near future that we're currently busy with.

If "many agree" that our current set of tray icons is poor, perhaps one of them is a professional graphics designer that can work with us to develop a new, better set.

Please keep in mind that this an open-source project and that we are only two developers who work on this in our spare-time. We derive absolutely no compensation from building Vidalia and have real lives with real-world obligations. We count on Tor users who are also interested in having a good, usable GUI for Tor to help us improve the state of things. Being a negative drag on the project does not help the project move forward. Constructive criticism, code patches, translations, and improved graphics are openly welcomed, but rude remarks are not helpful.

you guys are doing a great job. i appreciate. i really do.

and there really are more important issues to solve than implementing some tinky-winky glitzy animations that noone really needs.

what i want in an gui is that it is well integrated with the underlying code and that it gives me the information i need to make productive use of that code without having to dig too deep into configs and logs and not sth to show off in front of my friends.

That´s what girls are for until i´m grown up ;)
